Jupiter Medical Center Dedicates Calcagnini Center for Mindfulness

JUPITER, FLA. (May 29, 2017) – Patients, physicians and residents of the greater Palm Beaches will now be able to access integrative medicine techniques to help them heal and even manage the stresses of everyday life at Jupiter Medical Center’s new Calcagnini Center for Mindfulness. The new Center, made possible by a generous lead gift from Nancy and Arthur Calcagnini, complements the hospital’s mainstream medicine and health care offerings by integrating mindfulness classes and workshops in a beautiful, soothing 2,600-square-foot healing space. A ribbon-cutting ceremony held, Thursday, March 16, included donors Mr. and Mrs. Calcagnini; David and Lynn Nicholson; Saki F. Santorelli, EdD, MA, one of the nation’s foremost leaders of the mindfulness movement; Jupiter Medical Center board members; Jupiter Medical Center President & CEO John D. Couris and Liv Vesely, President of Jupiter Medical Center Foundation.

“The opening of the Calcagnini Center for Mindfulness allows Jupiter Medical Center to address yet another facet of the community’s health and wellness,” said Couris. “Rigorously researched by world renowned scientists, mindfulness is proven to reduce physical and psychological symptoms, and we are pleased to be able to bring this vital service to the people of Palm Beach and Martin counties.”

One of the cornerstones of the Calcagnini Center for Mindfulness is training in Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR), a form of mind-body medicine that Jupiter Medical Center is offering in collaboration with the University of Massachusetts Medical School’s Center for Mindfulness, where MBSR was founded in 1979. Patients, physicians, medical center team members and anyone in the community who looking for a better way to manage stress can participate in a comprehensive, eight-week course that explores the principles and practices of MBSR. This training is ideal for cultivating greater awareness of the mind-body connection and developing tools to improve health and well-being. The mind is known to be a significant factor in stress and stress-related disorders, and stress often causes physical symptoms that traditional medicine is not always able to address. Nearly four decades of scientific research by a growing cadre of highly regarded international scientists indicates that individuals trained in mindfulness and MBSR have an enhanced ability to tap into their inner resources and improve their own health.

“We are tremendously grateful to Arthur and Nancy Calcagnini for their generous gift and vision to bring mindfulness training into Jupiter Medical Center,” said Liv E. Vesely, President of Jupiter Medical Center Foundation.

The Calcagnini Center for Mindfulness will be the premiere location for mindfulness in South Florida and the Treasure Coast, and the Center will begin taking appointments in late spring of 2017.
